OkiAJET Lesson Sharing and Professional Development Session
Date: Saturday, June 2nd, 2018
Time: 1pm – 3pm
Location: Naha-shi Chuo Kominkan [那覇市中央公民館]
Do you have a mind-blowingly awesome lesson plan that you’re itching to share with your OkiJET ALT peers? Are you in search of an English activity so great that your students will weep with joy, and your JTEs will bestow upon you praises and laurels aplenty? Or are you a CIR adrift in the stormy seas of keigo and Japanese e-mail etiquette?
If so, please come along to our LSPD sesh (short for ‘Lesson Sharing & Professional Development’, NOT affiliated with any US Police Department)!
This is an informal, unofficial event and is not affiliated with the JET Programme (unlike orientation, new JET training, SDC, etc.). The purpose of this event is to bring OkiJETs together in a casual setting (no suits/kariyushi wear allowed!), share ideas we have about our work, and ultimately grow and flourish as ALTs and CIRs.
Depending on numbers, we are hoping to split attendees into 4 groups:
ALT (ES) group leader: Alex Dzurissin
ALT (JHS) group leader: Luke James
ALT (SHS) group leader: Shaina Somers
CIR group leader: Jaime Cerna
Please RSVP so we can get an idea of numbers!
Please can every ALT attendee bring with them at least one activity that we can practise together as a group. (April 2018 arrivals are not required to bring an activity, but are welcome to if they wish.)

Good luck gumballers!
Calling all OkiJETs! April is just around the corner and you know what that means…..it’s Gumball Rally time!! For those of you wondering what the hell is a “Gumball Rally”, it’s a super cool island wide competition organized by OkiAJET for all of you. Think of it as a sort of scavenger hunt, except instead of finding things, you’re completing specific tasks for points. These tasks range from very simple to extremely embarrassing. The more difficult the task, the higher the point value. This list of tasks is top secret and will be presented to you either slightly before or on the day of the event.
We usually meet at 10 AM in front of the Starbucks in Chatan. The event will run until 4 or 5 PM (TBA) when all teams have to reconvene at the end of the day.
You will compete in groups of at least 2, and a maximum of 4 people. Each team is only allowed ONE car and ONE designated driver. Please come up with a group name and a team uniform (refer to event picture) If you’d like to participate but can’t find a team, please message me and I’ll do my best to find you one! The cost to enter will be 1000 yen per person. Each team will play for a charity (more details to be announced later). All proceeds from the rally will be donated to the winning team’s charity. WHOOP WHOOP!!! To win the game, a team simply has to rack up the highest number of points by completing as many tasks as you can. Like I said, every task has different point values, so it’s up to you and your strategic skills to make the most of it in a limited time frame.
The logistics for submitting proof of task completions will be announced in detail later but the general idea is that every time you complete a challenge, you take a video/photo of it and post it to Google Drive or your own Facebook page created just for your team, in real time. We are still working out the kinks for this process, so more on that in a few weeks.
We will also have an after party at an izakaya in the evening where we will eat, drink, and watch a highlight reel of all the teams epic wins and fails!
Get your game faces on and lets enjoy together!!!!!!!
Have ideas for Gumball this year? Let the organizing team know via the Gumball survey.
This year we are shaking things up with Gumball.!! We are adding 3 brand-spanking new ways to rack up the points, so please consider the following when submitting suggestions:
Lotto: some of your favourite gumball items are now up for lotto! This means at the finish line you could be up for some major big points, or hardly any at all. Do ya feel lucky?
Snowball: points that build for every consecutive thing done within that category
Trifecta: three different but theme related tasks will garner some huge points, but you have to be able to finish them all!
Good luck gumballers!
Event: OkiAJET Elections
Attention all current Okijets! With spring and the blossoming sakura comes a new beginning, in your schools and workplaces and so too with OkiAJET. The time has come for the annual OkiAJET Elections! Have your say with who will represent you next year on the 2018/2019 OkiAJET Leadership team!
Over the past couple of weeks we have been asking you for nominations for OkiAJET Representative, I’m happy to announce the finalized list of candidates, Chris Bell, Shuaib Syed and Oliver Weeden!
Please take a look at their statements. The candidates put a lot of work into these so please give them your attention in helping you make your voting decisions. Voting is only open to current Okijets.
You can vote via the survey monkey link, please vote for 2 candidates and of course please just vote once. The polls are open until Tuesday, March 27th!
Good luck, you three!
If you don’t already know, every year, pro baseball teams do their spring training in stadiums around Okinawa. There are several games happening at the end of the month on February 24 and 25 which are open to the public.
Let’s head to the February 25th game at Okinawa Cellular Stadium (Onoyama Park) to watch the Hiroshima Carps vs the Yomiuri Giants (go Giants!).
Tickets are 1800円 but including service and handling fees, it will come out to about 2200円. Tickets can be reserved online then paid for at any Family Mart.
The website can be a little tricky to navigate, especially if you can’t decipher the Japanese. For this, we definitely recommend Google Chrome browser doing the translation for you. Here is a step by step guide with screenshots on how to reserve tickets online. Or you can try to navigate it yourself
Google chrome will translate it to “Uchino free seats,” that’s where some Okijets have already reserved their seats.
If the Carps or the Giants aren’t your jam, there are number of other teams playing. Please connect with Samantha Kwok if you have any questions, she is happy to help you reserve tickets for those games if you need it.
Let’s go see a ball game!
Event: Cherry Blossom Viewing
Event: Nago Sakura Matsuri
Okinawan sakura season is about to begin, and with it comes the Nago Sakura Matsuri! Let’s all get together for an afternoon of festival food, entertainments, more festival food and hopefully some sakura too!
Meeting point is outside Nago Gajimaru (3 Chome-26-5 Miyazato, Nago, Okinawa Prefecture 905-0011) at 2 pm! From there we will be able to watch the parades and various performances, and did I mention there will be festival food?
We will also be walking up to Nago Park to take in the beautiful, (hopefully) blossoming sakura!
Please note that Nago is in the North of Okinawa and over an hour’s drive from Naha. It may be closer to 1.5-2 hours depending on traffic, which can get busy during festival time. For those of you down south who would like to go but need a ride, and for those offering lifts let’s use this event page to get all this organised!
Event: Ugly Sweater Potluck + White Elephant
When: Saturday December 16th, 2017
Where: Okinawa City, Okinawa
By this time, we’re all family by now…right? Let’s get together and celebrate with an ugly sweater party! This is a potluck style event so please bring something that is big enough to share with a large group.
White Elephant is optional, you don’t have to participate if you don’t want to. However, Samantha will be putting up a poll on the Facebook event to find out who wants to do it or not. If you check yes, then it is assumed you are committed to bringing a gift to play. The limit amount for White Elephant is 2000円 so don’t be a Scrooge.
Nico has kindly volunteered his place to host this party!
Please RSVP on the Facebook event page by December 8th or connect with Samantha Kwok.

Also be aware that even if you don’t eat or drink anything but just want to attend the event, you still have to pay the full price.

Minna-san, haisai! ☀️
We’ve had our welcome parties for groups A and B, but how about a welcome party for everyone, I hear you cry! Something big! Something exotic! Something with… sea turtles?! 🐢
Here at OkiAJET we feel the same way you do, and that is why we are organising a big get together on Zamami Island. Located a 2 hour ferry ride away from Tomari Port in Naha, the island is famous for its beautiful beaches, abundant sea life (including the aforementioned sea turtles) and, of course, its 2 awesome JETs – Luke and Jaime. 😜
So JETs new and old, please come along and enjoy this unique little slice of Okinawan paradise with us!
Ferry times and prices:
NAHA-ZAMAMI 10/14 10:00-12:00
ZAMAMI-NAHA 10/15 14:00-16:00
Price: ¥3,820 per person (round trip with group discount)
*If you would like to come, but use boats other than these (e.g. those travelling from Tokashiki Island), please make the booking yourself and let us know by responding to Shaina’s polls on the Facebook event.
We will be staying in the Zamami Cultural Centre in the Ama District of Zamami Island. However the option to camp on the nearby camp site is also available to those who would prefer to spend their night gazing at the stars.
If you are staying in the Zamami Cultural Centre it will be ¥2,800 per person.
Information on both the cabins and campground can be found at:
What to bring:
* Cash: We recommend bringing at least ¥12,000-15,000 to Zamami as, not only will the ferry and accommodation costs need to be paid in cash, but there is only 1 ATM on the entire island, and all transactions here are cash-based.
* Snorkelling gear: Necessary if you want to take a peek at the island’s beautiful coral reefs and sea life! There are also places on the island that offer rental services.
* Camping gear (if camping): see the link above for more information.
Please RSVP on this event by THURS AUGUST 31st at 17:00. We need to reserve the ferries and accommodation in advance (although payment can be made for both on the day). Maybes will NOT be counted as attending. Unless you explicitly tell us otherwise via the polls posted on this page, if you are listed as “going” we will assume you are taking the ferries and staying in the cabins as outlined above, with a combined cost of ¥6,080.
Hope to see you here! 🏝
PS: In the event of a typhoon, or other poor weather making the voyage to Zamami impossible, OkiAJET will organise a separate event on Okinawa Hontou (main island), most likely some form of Beach BBQ.
Event: OkiAJET T-Shirt Contest
Deadline: September 28th
お疲れ to our hardworking artists; Yeu-Ann Huang, Dee Jaye Jackson, Candice Soon and Jasmine Yorke, for your submissions to this years T-Shirt Contest. Congratulations to Candice Soon for the winning design!
Event: Koza Orion Beer Festival
When: Saturday, September 16th, 2017
It’s that time of year again, where the Orion is fresh and flowing, the sanshins are strumming and the Eisa is happening! The Koza Orion Beer Festival is one of the major events of the summer. Although second semester may have already started, come out and celebrate Orion! The pride of Okinawa.
Event: Churaumi Aquarium
When: Saturday, September 9th, 2017
So unfortunately according to the weather forecasts, this week looks like rain…rain… and yep you guessed it, more rain. So what better way to escape than to check out one of Okinawa’s famous gems, Churaumi Aquarium!
We will meet at the aquarium at 1pm in front of the big whale statue (seen in the below photo), and go in together. Its a pretty big place with lots to see so get your cameras ready. We will also most likely do a late lunch/ early dinner somewhere in the north so please RSVP on the Facebook event page so we can make the appropriate bookings. If the weather is clear enough we might even be able to hit the beach for a spot of swimming and some beach activities, so pack your swimming costumes just in case!
The aquarium is located in Motobu so please try to car pool! If you need a ride please post on the Facebook page.
Hope to see you all there!
Event: Round One!
Date: Monday August 21st, 2017
The humidity is rising and staying inside with the air conditioning is all too tempting an option…so why not do it among friends? Round One has arcade games, roller skating, bowling, AND air conditioning! Come join us after the New JET Orientation to escape the heat, meet your fellow Okijets and most importantly, play some Mario Kart.
Date: Sunday, August 13th, 2017
Festival season is officially in full swing! What better way to start it off by venturing up to the northern reaches of our beautiful little island and enjoy some festival food and some of the best fireworks Okinawa has to offer.
Ogimi festival runs Saturday 8/12 through Sunday 8/13. There will be music, food, beer, tug of war, and of course fireworks.
Its advised to try and maybe arive early (spend the whole day if you want!) to secure us some space. From there we can relax, eat and enjoy the matsuri!
You can find the full line-up of events in the Facebook event info. We will also try to coordinate rideshares for the new JETs who dont quite have cars yet so please comment in the Facebook event if you can be a driver and if you need a lift (and from where). Some JETs will also be offering up some tatami so there is no need to drink and drive. If you have space for the Sunday night and need a place to crash also please comment in the Facebook event.
Hope to see many of your lovely (new and old) faces there!
